Oct. 23- The coat worn by The Wizard in the “The Wizard of Oz” was previously owned by L. Frank Baum

Released in 1939, “The Wizard of Oz” transformed color in film. While it wasn’t the first movie filmed in color, it has had a giant impact in the movie industry.

The costume assistant on set had bought an old coat from a thrift shop intended for The Wizard to wear. Frank Morgan, the actor who played The Wizard, noticed “L. Frank Baum” was written on the inside of one of the pockets. Baum’s widow, Maude Gage Baum, confirmed that the coat had previously belonged to him.

Kellie Hastrup is a 17 year old senior at Colonia High School. She has a younger brother and a tortoiseshell cat named Torre. She is currently the president of Fashion Club and is in 3 honor societies. In her free time, she likes to crochet, paint, and various other arts and crafts. In addition, she loves reading and writing. She plans to study filmmaking and hopes to become a screenwriter in the future. Hastrup’s favorite book is “The Great Gatsby” as she believes that the symbolism and characters were excellently written. Her favorite music genres are pop, rock, alternative and more.
